Strength Exceeds Age: The Cane-Carrying Gym Warrior
I went to the gym today. There were a few people here and there.
They all had one thing in common: intense focus. Brows were furrowed, eye contact went amiss, and they were individually plugged into whatever buzzed through their headphones.
Another observation that lacked the same commonality was the lone spiral-bound notebook I saw perched on the weight machine.
Equally eye-catching, it was bestowed by an eighty-year-old woman pumping iron on the chest press machine.
The third facet of intrigue was her cane propped up against the weights.
I watched with interest as her frail arms completed a few reps.
And then, she did it.
She took out her pen and made a notation in her notebook. I presume a recording of her reps or weights to the exercise she just performed.
A note of her progress. To document her achievement. A reference point so she can look back in time.
It got me thinking… why is she the only person in this entire gym tracking her stats?
The ripped guy doing pull-ups in the corner didn’t have a notebook.
The cross-fit junkie clanking dumbells on the ground didn’t have a notebook.
